  • Jul 18, 2020 · In my understanding of how the EDL system works, one wheel should NOT be able to spin freely without the car trying to brake that wheel and re-establish traction. That said either the front or rear axle with no traction will spin freely until the wheels gain some form of traction (stepping on the brake or using the e-brake should help re ...

  • When removing a dust cap, jack the trailer tire up so the wheel can spin freely. As the wheel rotates, tap the dust cap from the top of the wheel so that you’re hitting it in a variety of places. Many suggest using a flat-edge screw driver to do this, which also works (and doesn’t require the tire to be jacked up).

Rear wheel drives, the front should spin freely. Front wheel drives should only spin if both wheels are off the ground. Grap a second person to push the brake while you turn the front tires and see if they stop and you can't spin them with some force with brake applied. 18. Spin the whole assembly and make sure it is good to go. 19. Install the wheel. 20. Lower the vehicle and torque the wheel down (110lb-ft is what light trucks should be torqued to. Thats what ive heard and I torque mine to) 21. Put any lug cover back in place 22. YOUR DONE!!! WOOT WOOT! 1. If the car is jacked up and on axle stands with rear wheels off the ground will the diff turn in order to get at all 6 retaining bolts on the prop shaft by turning one of the rear wheels with autobox in Neutral. The small lever located at the left side of the jack should be up when raising the car and down when lowering the car. Use the wheel bolt wrench to operate the jack. When removing a rear wheel, take off the wheel cover, by raising up the loop at the rear end until it is clear of its hook, then pull cover backward to disengage lug at front end.

Aug 16, 2019 · Wheel bearings are a critical part of the trailer body. They help support the trailer's weight and keep the wheels turning on the axle. Properly maintained bearings allow the wheel to spin freely, without putting unnecessary friction on the trailer axle. A wheel bearing that has been neglected eventually leaks and deteriorates. I jacked up the front drivers side, and the wheel on that side is extremely difficult to spin. It doesn't sound like anything is dragging, it's just very tough to move it. I don't have lockout hubs neither and the jeep was in 2wd during the "test" Using a laser temperature gauge, both front brake rotors read about 200 degrees after returning from a 5 mile round trip. I jacked up the front and each wheel rotates about only about 1/4 turn with a good shove. I realize new pads may give off some odor, but is this disk temp and free wheel rotation out of the ordinary? thanks. As a rule of thumb, no discernable freeplay should be apparent between the hub and the axle. The wheel should turn freely and quietly.

Sep 15, 2005 · * The mechanism on the front wheel (drive rotor?) which attaches to the speedo cable does not turn if the front wheel spins. I didn't have the engine running though, just jacked up on the centre stand and spun the front wheel manually. Do I need to replace the speedo or any of the other parts?
If you jack up both wheels the other will spin reverse direction. If you are in neutral then it would spin freely. Typically a stuck brake will pull to the opposite side when you hit the brakes from it, then when you go you will pull to the side of the stuck brake and smell it for a few miles. 1 - 4 of 4 Posts
Whilst working on my rear brakes, with the car jacked up and the rear caliper removed, the wheel hub was hard (stiff) to turn. The same on the other side. My '91 Roadster is fitted with an LSD.

The car is front wheel drive. You will feel the resistance of the transmission when turning the wheel. Go spin the rear wheels and those will be as you're describing. Note this is a stick shift and it was out of gear at the time.
Some drag is normal due to the contact of the brakes, drag from the drive axles etc. So the wheels will not spin freely like a bicycle. A small amount of effort is required to get them to spin. It's tough to say how much drag is normal.
Spin the wheel counterclockwise to do this. Mount the drum and spin it along the hub, inspecting it for light friction. Some friction is normal, and the shoes will re-center themselves after some normal driving. Make sure that the wheel doesn't spin too freely; if it seems to, remove the drum and tighten the wheel another five clicks.
With the car jacked up and the tire off the ground, does shaking the tire the left to right produce more looseness and clinking than shaking the tire from top to bottom? The left to right looseness is a sign of a worn component in the steering linkage, which is what controls the wheel movement in the left-right direction.
The first, and probably simplest is that your front tires are simply starting to wear in a single direction causing them to make more road noise. If you don’t rotate your tires regularly, maybe every 5000 miles, they can start to wear in a single direction. This can happen even more quickly on a front wheel drive car.

Could be dragging / sticky brakes,or a dry bearing tightening up getting ready to seize up . Or if you have front wheel drive you have drag from the cv shaft and the trans is locked in park, the other described problems can still be in play as well.
The bearings were toast when I replaced the original tire at about 5,000 miles. If I recall correctly, there was some crud building up on the outside seals but the real proof was when I had the wheel off, I put two fingers inside each bearing and spun the wheel against the floor then let it spin freely. It would spin but it felt very gritty/notchy.

If it's a FWD with a manual transmission, the wheel you turn will spin the ring gear (sometimes called a "crown gear" 'cause it looks kind of like a crown), which will turn the opposing wheel in the opposite direction. If it's in neutral, you can even spin one wheel without turning the other.

Safely jack up the car and try to spin the wheel by hand. You might be able to hear an unusual grinding noise or feel resistance in the wheel bearing. You may need to remove the wheel and the brake caliper assembly if the brake pads get in the way. With the wheel still up in the air, check for any play in the wheel bearing.

If you had the car jacked up only on one side with a perfectly good working car w/a non-lsd trans and turned the car on, put it in gear, the car wouldn't go anywhere.
